Morten Axel Pedersen is a Professor at the Department of Anthropology, University of Copenhagen, and affiliated with the Copenhagen Center for Social Data Science (SODAS) and the Centre for AI in Society (CAISA). His work bridges anthropology with social data science, focusing on political economy, cultural imaginaries, and digital sovereignty.
- PhD in Social Anthropology (2002) from the University of Cambridge
His research explores the intersection of political forms, cultural practices, and digital technologies through long-term ethnographic fieldwork in Asia and Europe. Key areas include computational anthropology, Chinese globalization, and the ethics of AI.
Recent publications analyze trans-temporal infrastructure projects, Sino-Mongolian border dynamics, and experimental ethnographic methodologies. He leads the ERC Advanced Grant project The Political Economy of Attention and co-founded SODAS, advocating interdisciplinary collaboration with computer science and media studies.
Current collaborations with Denmark’s governmental Task Force for Artificial Intelligence address tech policy and responsible AI frameworks.
