Moritz Schularick is President of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy and Professor of Economics at Sciences Po and Kiel University. He is also a Fellow of the DFG-Excellence Cluster ECONtribute and Director of the MacroFinance Lab. Previously, he was Professor of Economics at the University of Bonn.
Dr. Schularick studied economics in Berlin, London, and Paris, receiving his PhD in 2005 from Freie Universität Berlin. His educational background provided the foundation for his expertise in macrofinance, economic history, and political economy.
Schularick's research focuses on financial stability, banking, international economics, political economy, and economic history. His work is question-driven, addressing central societal issues such as the origins of financial stability, excessive risk-taking in financial markets, the link between rising debt and inequality, monetary policy effects on asset prices, and the past and future of globalization. His research with Òscar Jordà and Alan Taylor on credit cycles and financial stability has significantly influenced macro-prudential policies aimed at curbing credit booms.
