Morgan James Luker is an Associate Professor of Music at Reed College’s Division of the Arts. His scholarly work centers on the cultural politics of Latin American music, with a particular focus on contemporary tango in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He holds a B.A. in Music History from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in ethnomusicology from Columbia University. Since joining the Reed faculty in 2010, he has taught courses such as Cultural Study of Music, Music and Politics, Latin American Popular Music, and Musical Ethnography.
Morgan directs the Tango For Musicians at Reed College, an intensive summer program that attracts musicians globally to study tango. His research includes a forthcoming book from the University of Chicago Press on contemporary tango. He emphasizes interdisciplinary engagement and the integration of performance practices into academic frameworks.
