Welson Tremura is a Professor in the School of Music and the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Florida. He also serves as Associate Director for the Center for Arts, Migration, and Entrepreneurship and Director for the Florida-Brazil International Linkage Institute. His academic appointments bridge musicology, ethnomusicology, and Latin American studies.
Dr. Tremura's research interests focus on ethnomusicology with emphasis on Brazilian traditions, particularly the folia de reis (Three Kings celebration) as an expression of folk Catholicism in Brazil. His scholarly work explores the intersection of music, religion, cultural identity, and digital technology in performance contexts.
His publications and research demonstrate significant contributions to understanding Afro-Brazilian musical traditions and their connections to broader American cultural contexts. Dr. Tremura's work bridges academic research with artistic practice, creating interdisciplinary connections across multiple fields.
As an educator, he has developed innovative programs including the Brazilian Music Institute (BMI), which attracts students and artists internationally for intensive study of Brazilian music traditions. His teaching spans ethnomusicology, world music, guitar performance, and Latin American music studies.
Dr. Tremura maintains an active international performance schedule, having appeared at prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall in New York City and DeBartolo Performing Arts Center in Notre Dame, Indiana. His performances and lectures have reached audiences across Brazil, China, Mexico, Guatemala, India, Spain, Portugal, Argentina, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, and New Zealand.
He directs multiple ensembles including Jacaré Choro (dedicated to Brazilian traditional instrumental music), Jacaré Brazil (Brazilian music ensemble), and the Alachua Guitar Quartet (focusing on Latin American classical guitar repertoires).
