Dr Moran Mandelbaum is a Lecturer in International Relations and Programme Director at Keele University's School of Social Sciences. He joined Keele in 2014 and has held roles including Acting Director of PGT Studies, Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Champion, and Director of PGR. His research focuses on nationalism, security, and political theory using psychoanalytical frameworks, particularly Lacanian theory and Slavoj Žižek's work. His book The Nation/State Fantasy (2020) offers a psychoanalytical genealogy of nationalism.
Dr Mandelbaum teaches modules such as Securing Global Order, War and Peace in IR, and Israel/Palestine: Key Issues. He has led funded projects including the ESRC-Collaborative Innovation Grant 'Psychoanalysis as Methodology' (2022/23) and co-organized international symposia on psychoanalysis in IR. He is an associate editor for Frontiers in Political Science and Journal of Global Faultlines.
His research explores themes like Brexit discourse, LGBTQ inclusion in Israel, and the geopolitics of antisemitism. Recent work includes a special issue on psychoanalysis and IR in International Studies Quarterly, and co-authored entries in the Oxford Bibliographies and Elgar Encyclopaedia of International Relations.
Dr Mandelbaum supervises students in international relations, critical security studies, nationalism, gender/sexuality, and Israel/Palestine. His funded projects include 'Psychoanalysing the 21st Century' (Keele University) and 'Interrogating the Void: Lacan and International Relations' (EISA).
