Professor Naomi Head is a leading scholar in International Relations at the University of Glasgow, specializing in the politics of empathy and emotions, conflict narratives, and counterinsurgency. She previously held positions at the University of Leeds and Aberystwyth University, where she was an ESRC Postdoctoral Fellow (2009-10). Her research explores empathy's role in conflict contexts, including the US military’s Human Terrain System and gender dynamics in counterinsurgency. She has held prestigious fellowships, including a Leverhulme Research Fellowship (2019) and ESRC support.
Her work integrates critical theory with empirical studies, addressing topics like NATO interventions, nonviolent resistance in Israel/Palestine, and emotional dimensions of the Iranian nuclear issue. She co-founded BISA’s Emotions in Politics and IR Working Group and serves as an elected Trustee (2020-22). Teaching awards include the BISA Excellence in Teaching Prize (2018) and recognition for innovative pedagogy.
Recent publications focus on empathy’s politicization, gender in US military strategies, and anti-racist academia. Her research spans journals like Security Dialogue and book chapters in major handbooks. She advises PhD students on topics ranging from cultural heritage and security to ex-combatant narratives in post-conflict societies.
