Monique Holt (MoMo) is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Theatre and Dance at Gallaudet University. A multidisciplinary artist, she holds roles as actor, director, writer, educator, and Director of Artistic Sign Language (DASL). Her work bridges Deaf culture, performance translation, and inclusive theatre practices. She actively teaches courses like Visual Gestural Communication, Introduction to Performance Translation, and Foundations of Acting.
MoMo’s research focuses on translating Shakespearean texts into sign language using cognitive approaches and advocating for Deaf representation in mainstream theatre. She is affiliated with professional unions including Actors’ Equity Association, SAG-AFTRA, and the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society. Her creative works include Fifty Flowers and contributions to productions like Clyborne Park and WELCOME TO HELL.
MoMo is committed to fostering student growth as artists and critical thinkers. She has advised 4 undergraduate students and contributed to Gallaudet’s Theatre Arts productions, including the 2023 FLOWER SHOP. Her recent scholarly focus includes accessibility in performance and Deaf storytelling methodologies.
Professional memberships include the American Association of University Professors (since 2023) and Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (since 2013). She frequently participates in panels and summits addressing Deaf theatre innovation and inclusive practices.
