Monika Sawicka

Monika Sawicka, Ph.D., is an Assistant at the Institute of American Studies and Polish Diaspora, Faculty of International and Political Studies, Jagiellonian University. Her research focuses on Brazil’s foreign policy, development cooperation, and contemporary political dynamics in Latin America through a constructivist international relations lens.

Her academic interests include Brazil’s foreign policy, development cooperation in the Global South, contemporary Brazilian politics, and constructivist approaches in international relations. She examines how emerging powers like Brazil navigate global status, regional integration, and multilateral institutions.

Monika Sawicka’s recent publications reveal a strong focus on Brazil’s evolving foreign policy under different administrations, particularly the Bolsonaro and Lula governments. Her work explores themes such as environmental policy, democratic fragility, human rights, and South-South cooperation. She frequently analyzes Brazil’s role as a mediator, its participation in the UN Human Rights Council, and its shifting partnerships with China and African nations.

Her scientific contributions include peer-reviewed articles in journals like Third World Quarterly, Sociedade e Estado, and Anuario Latinoamericano, as well as authored and edited books on Brazil’s international activism and Latin American studies.

She has coordinated research projects funded by the National Science Centre (NCN) and the Flagship Project POB Future SOC. She has also served as a visiting lecturer at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (2021, 2024) and the State University of Rio de Janeiro (2022), reflecting her international academic engagement. She regularly contributes to public discourse through media appearances on Radio TOK FM and TVN24, and participates in expert panels and conferences.

Monika Sawicka is actively involved in research teams, including the Future Democracy Lab, and collaborates with scholars across Poland and Latin America. Her work bridges academic research and public policy, particularly in understanding democratic challenges and foreign policy reorientation in fragile democracies.
