Oliver Stuenkel is an Associate Professor at the School of International Relations of Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV) in São Paulo, Brazil. As a Senior Fellow at the Democracy, Conflict, and Governance Program of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, he focuses on Latin American politics, Brazil’s role in global governance, and the interplay between BRICS and U.S./China. He is a columnist for Américas Quarterly and Estadão, frequently analyzing geopolitics, democracy, and economic trends.
- Education: BA from Universidad de Valencia (Spain), MPP at Harvard Kennedy School of Government, PhD in Political Science from the University of Duisburg-Essen (Germany).
His research spans Latin American politics, BRICS cooperation, U.S. influence in Latin America, and democratic defense mechanisms. Key themes include the shifting balance of power in global order, South-South cooperation, and Brazil’s strategic autonomy. He has directed a 2016-2019 oral history project with interviews from former Latin American leaders.
