Dr. Monika Gjorgjieva is an SNSF Ambizione Fellow at the University of Geneva. Her research focuses on deciphering molecular mechanisms underlying renal carcinoma incidence and progression, particularly in the context of metabolic risk factors such as obesity, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease. She is developing an in vivo renal carcinoma model to better mimic human pathology and identify novel therapeutic targets.
Her research interests include miRNA regulation in cancer and metabolic disorders, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress pathways, and the interplay between metabolic reprogramming and tumorigenesis. Key projects involve studying ERMP1 as an ER stress gatekeeper and miR-22’s role in hepatocellular carcinoma development.
Awards:
- SNSF Ambizione Fellowship
Research Themes: Her work bridges renal and hepatic oncology, with a focus on translational models to address unmet clinical needs in kidney and liver cancers. Collaborations span molecular biology, genetics, and translational medicine.
