Monika Class is an Associate Professor in English Literature at Lund University's Centre for Languages and Literature (SOL), where she has been active since 2022. Her research explores the transformative impact of literature on readers' embodied experiences, with current projects including The Visceral Novel Reader (focusing on literature, emotion and affect) and Aquatic Imaginaries (examining environmental humanities in contemporary poetry).
Research Focus: Her interdisciplinary work spans three primary domains:
- Medical humanities and narrative theory
- 19th-century literature-philosophy intersections
- Environmental humanities and sustainability studies
Teaching & Education: Class teaches courses including Environmental Humanities, English Literature, Literature and Medicine, and Literary Theory. Her academic credentials include:
- D.Phil from University of Oxford (2009)
- MA in English/German Literature from Otto-Friedrich University Bamberg (2003)
- Docent qualification from Lund University (2022)
Doctoral Supervision: Currently advising PhD candidates on projects including:
- Mari Komnæs: Substitutes of equal ability: Education, class and gender in texts of British Women Writers in the 1790s
- E. de Wachter: Sentient Bodies of Land and Water
Research Leadership: Co-leads several projects at Lund Environmental Humanities Hub and collaborates internationally with scholars across Europe.
