Monika Amsler is a Research Fellow at the Department of Ancient History and the Classical Tradition at the University of Bern. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Zurich and specializes in the material culture of ancient texts and knowledge transmission in late antiquity.
Her research focuses on:
- Ancient book composition and transmission methods
- Talmudic literature and Late Antique book culture
- Archaeological evidence of ancient writing practices
- Material aspects of textual preservation
Dr. Amsler's work examines how physical formats like scrolls, wooden slats (pinqas), and written scraps (pitqi) influenced the composition and transmission of religious and scholarly works in antiquity. She investigates how ancient texts were stored in jars based on thematic organization before being edited into final forms.
Her publications demonstrate consistent focus on the physical nature of ancient books and their cultural contexts, revealing how material constraints shaped religious and scholarly knowledge construction across centuries.
