David Goodblatt is a Professor in the Department of History at the University of California San Diego, where he has taught since 1988. He holds a Ph.D. from Brown University (1972), an M.H.L. from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America (1966), and an A.B. from Harvard University (1963). His research focuses on the history of the Jewish people, Judaism, and the Middle East in the millennium preceding Islam, particularly exploring themes of identity, governance, and religious development in antiquity.
His scholarly work emphasizes the intersection of political structures, ethnic identity, and religious practice in ancient Jewish communities. Key areas of expertise include the Babylonian Talmudic academies, the political dynamics of Palestinian Jewry under Roman rule, and the socio-historical context of the Dead Sea Scrolls. He has published extensively on topics such as ancient Jewish nationalism, the Hasmonean-Herodian period, and the relationship between Jewish communities in the Land of Israel and Babylonia.
Goodblatt's publications include monographs like Elements of Ancient Jewish Nationalism (2006) and edited volumes analyzing the historical context of the Second Temple and Late Roman periods. His current work-in-progress, Hasmonean-Herodian Judah: Identity and Culture, continues his exploration of ancient Jewish identity formation.
He teaches courses on Jewish history, the Middle East before Islam, and the Jewish diaspora in antiquity, reflecting his commitment to integrating historical research with pedagogical engagement. His research has been supported through his academic tenure at UCSD and collaborations with international scholars in the field of ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern studies.
