Monica Das Gupta is a Research Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Maryland, College Park. She previously held roles at the World Bank (1998–2012), Harvard University's Center for Population and Development Studies (1992–98), and the National Council of Applied Economic Research in New Delhi (1982–92). Her research focuses on family systems, maternal and child health, gender disparities, and public health systems in developing countries. Key areas include son preference in Asia, population dynamics, and climate change impacts on poverty.
Education: Ph.D. in Social Anthropology and Demography from the University of Sussex (1982), M.Sc. and B.Sc. in Demography/Social Anthropology from the London School of Economics (1974/1973).
Research interests span public health systems in India and Sri Lanka, low-cost preventive care models, and the implications of China’s marriage market challenges. Her work integrates anthropology, demography, and policy analysis to address gender equity, health equity, and sustainable development.
Publications highlight themes like 'missing girls' in Asia, climate change adaptation, and institutional design of health systems. Current projects include studies on China’s aging bachelor population and Sri Lanka’s public health frameworks.
