Vivian Choi is an Associate Professor and Department Chair of Sociology and Anthropology at St. Olaf College. She is also affiliate faculty in the Environmental Studies and Race, Ethnic, Gender and Sexuality Studies programs.

- B.A. in Anthropology (minor in Gender and Feminist Studies), Pomona College
- M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociocultural Anthropology (designated emphasis in Social Theory and Comparative History), University of California, Davis
Her research examines the political, environmental, and technological dimensions of disasters. Current projects include a book on the intersections of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and Sri Lanka's civil war (Disaster Nationalism: Tsunami and Civil War in Sri Lanka, Duke University Press, forthcoming) and a new study on climate change and sea surface warming as slow-moving disasters in the Indian Ocean.
She has received research funding from prestigious organizations such as the Fulbright-Hays Program, Wenner Gren Foundation, and National Endowment for Humanities. As co-curator/editor of Writing with Light, she explores interdisciplinary intersections of photography, ethnography, and design.

At St. Olaf, she teaches courses ranging from introductory anthropology to specialized topics like disasters, environmental justice, and global interdependence. Prior to her current role, she held a postdoctoral fellowship at Cornell University and taught at the University of Tennessee's program on Disasters, Displacement and Human Rights.
