Monica DE CAROLI is an Associate Professor at the University of Salento, Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences and Technologies, where she conducts research in Environmental and Applied Botany at the Ecotekne Center in Lecce.
Her educational background includes:
- PhD in Biology and Biotechnology (18th cycle) from the University of Lecce (SSD BIO/03)
- Degree in Biological Sciences with molecular biology focus from University of Lecce
- National Scientific Qualification in Competitive Sector 05/A1 obtained May 31, 2021
- Qualification to practice as a biologist
Dr. De Caroli's research focuses on applied plant biology using cytomorphological approaches with confocal and scanning electron microscopy. Her work examines plant adaptation strategies to biotic stresses (pathogen attacks) and abiotic stresses (water and heat), particularly how these affect the secretory pathway, cellular compartmentalization, and cell wall structures in model and agricultural plants. The applied dimension of her research includes extraction of plant bioactive molecules using supercritical fluids and ultrastructural characterization of plant matrices through advanced microscopy techniques.
She teaches Environmental Botany courses at the University of Salento, with recent exam announcements for the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 academic years indicating her active teaching role.
Her professional trajectory shows progression from research technician to academic researcher: from November 2009 to February 2022 she served as Head Technician of the Plant Cell Biology Laboratory while conducting research, and since February 4, 2022 she has held a fixed-term position as a type B researcher in Scientific-Disciplinary Sector BIO/03 'Environmental and Applied Botany' following competitive selection.
