Dr. Bernd Zechmann is a Research Professor and Director of the Center for Microscopy and Imaging (CMI) at Baylor University, located in the Baylor Sciences Building. He leads a research program focused on ultrastructural analysis of stress responses in plants, bacteria, and human pathogens using advanced electron and light microscopy techniques.
- PhD in Biology and Botany, University of Graz, Austria (2003)
- Postdoctoral Lecture Qualification (Habilitation), University of Graz (2009)
- Undergraduate studies in Biology and Botany, University of Graz (1995–2001)
- Study abroad at University of Oklahoma (1998–1999)
His research interests center on subcellular redox biology, particularly the compartment-specific roles of glutathione and reactive oxygen species during environmental stress. He is also deeply involved in developing novel sample preparation methods for microscopy and 3D ultrastructural imaging of plant and microbial systems. His recent work extends into inclusive science education through tactile and visual aids for the blind.
His recent publications (2021–2024) reflect a strong trend in advanced microscopy applications across diverse systems—from plant-virus interactions and fungal pathogenesis to bacterial biofilms and human cell ultrastructure. There is a consistent emphasis on redox dynamics, stress adaptation, and methodological innovation, particularly in sample preparation and imaging resolution. Several 2024 papers highlight his growing interest in accessible science communication.
Dr. Zechmann has received several scientific honors:
- Fritz-Grasenick Award, Austrian Society for Electron Microscopy (2008)
- Erzherzog Johann Research Award, Styrian Government (2005)
- Achievement Award, University of Graz (2005)
- Dissertation Award, University of Graz (2002)
As Director of CMI, he mentors students and researchers in microscopy techniques and supports interdisciplinary research across Baylor. He has collaborated on numerous grants and publications involving plant stress, microbial pathogenesis, and nanotoxicology. His lab contributes to both fundamental biological discovery and applied method development.
Dr. Zechmann leads the Center for Microscopy and Imaging, a core facility supporting advanced imaging across disciplines. His team specializes in electron microscopy, 3D reconstruction, immunolabeling, and innovative staining protocols. The center promotes training, collaboration, and outreach, including projects on accessible science for visually impaired learners.
