Fabrizio Damiano serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Experimental Medicine at the University of Salento, specializing in Molecular Biology (BIO/11). Based at the Ecotekne Center Pal. B on the SP 6 campus in Lecce-Monteroni, he maintains his office on the ground floor and holds regular office hours on Fridays from 3:00-6:00 PM, with virtual meeting accommodations during health emergencies.
Damiano earned his degree in Biological Sciences in 1993 with honors, followed by a specialization in Biotechnological Applications from the University of Bari in 1997. He completed his PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 2002, establishing his research foundation in plant molecular biology.
His research focuses on RNA editing mechanisms and mitochondrial genome structure in plants, particularly examining tRNA gene expression in higher plant mitochondria, RNA editing of orf522 in sunflower mitochondrial genomes, and the complexity of oat mitochondrial genomes. This molecular biology work represents significant contributions to understanding plant mitochondrial genetics and function.
Damiano progressed from laboratory technician (2002), to tenured researcher (2006), to obtaining National Scientific Qualification for associate professor (2017), and finally achieving his current position as Associate Professor in 2022. His academic journey at the University of Salento demonstrates steady career advancement within the same institution.
