Mona Paulsen

Dr Mona Paulsen is an Assistant Professor of Law at the LSE Law School, specializing in international economic law with a focus on trade governance, economic security, and WTO reform. Her research examines national security exceptions, trade policy coordination, and the intersection of industrial policies with global economic frameworks. She advises the UK government on trade and economic security, including contributions to the Department of Business & Trade and the Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office. Dr Paulsen holds a PhD from King’s College London and an LLM from The George Washington University School of Law.

Her research interests span WTO institutional dynamics, historical legal analysis of trade treaties, and contemporary challenges in balancing economic security with multilateral trade commitments. She frequently engages with global institutions like the WTO, OECD, and the UK Trade Policy Forum, and contributes to platforms such as the World Trade Review editorial board and WorldTradeLaw.net’s blog.

Key professional roles include co-convening the London-based International Economic Law & Politics working group and serving as a founding member of the TaPP Network. Previously, she was a Teaching Fellow at Stanford Law School, an Emile Noël Fellow at NYU’s Jean Monnet Center, and a visiting lecturer at UC Davis and King’s College London. She is a qualified lawyer in Ontario (2007) and has advised on international investment treaty disputes.
