Mollie Welsh Kruger is a Supervised Fieldwork Advisor and Course Instructor at Bank Street College. With 18 years of experience teaching second grade in Harlem public schools and five years in a Tremont parochial early childhood classroom, her work emphasizes culturally sustaining pedagogies. She holds an EdD in Curriculum & Teaching from Teachers College, Columbia University. Her research focuses on children’s literature, students’ funds of knowledge, and the integration of the arts in urban education settings.
Currently, she co-chairs the Bank Street College Children’s Book Committee and has developed a 6-session curriculum for Brooklyn Public Library targeting reading development in ages 5-9. Mollie has presented widely on topics such as immigrant/refugee experiences in middle-grade texts and strategies for building joyful readers. Her publications include analyses of poetry books for children and constructivist approaches to online teacher education.
Her professional development includes training in arts-integrated learning and the workshop model for writing/reading instruction. She advocates for diversity and social justice in literacy education, as evidenced by her involvement with the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).
