Mohammad Alam is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics at the University of Kentucky. He is affiliated with the Center for Appalachian Research in Environmental Sciences (UK-CARES), the Markey Cancer Center, and the Molecular and Cellular Oncology Research Program. His research bridges microbiology, immunology, and neuroscience, focusing on the interplay between gut microbiota and neurodegenerative diseases.

Alam’s research explores how gut microbiota and their metabolites influence neuroinflammation and tumorigenesis. He investigates mechanisms linking gut health to Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, as well as colorectal cancer. His work also includes translational studies in pharmaceutical innovation.
He has secured significant grants, including a 2023 Institutional Research Grant from the American Cancer Society and a 2020 COBRE grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. His awards highlight contributions to translational research and microbiome science.
