Mohammad Arifuzzaman is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Weill Cornell Medicine. His research is conducted through the Arifuzzaman Lab, which is affiliated with multiple centers including the Friedman Center for Nutrition and Inflammation, the Drukier Institute for Children's Health, and the Jill Roberts Institute for Research in Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
Dr. Arifuzzaman earned his Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics and Microbiology from Duke University, where he studied innate immune defense mechanisms of mast cells and macrophages in Dr. Soman Abraham's lab. He completed postdoctoral training with Dr. David Artis at Weill Cornell, focusing on the regulation of eosinophils by gut microbiota. His educational background includes B.S. and M.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Dhaka, and prior work as an NIH Fogarty Fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School.
His research focuses on understanding how diet and microbiota regulate the immune system in various settings including inflammatory and metabolic diseases, infection, and cancer. The Arifuzzaman Lab employs cutting-edge metabolomics-based approaches integrating targeted and untargeted metabolomics with bacterial genetics and host transcriptomics to identify key microbial metabolites, microbial genes responsible for their production, and host receptors that mediate their effects. Current research efforts focus on defining the impact of diet and microbial metabolites on intestinal inflammation and tumorigenesis, as well as immune-metabolic interactions in obesity and liver disease.
His recent publications in high-impact journals including Nature, Cell, and Immunity reveal significant discoveries about how dietary components influence gut microbiota composition and metabolic activity, which in turn affect host immune and metabolic outcomes. His work has particularly illuminated connections between dietary fiber, microbiota-derived metabolites, and type 2 immune responses in inflammatory conditions.

Dr. Arifuzzaman is actively building his research team at Weill Cornell Medicine, having recently established his independent laboratory. His lab currently includes research technicians Elin Hu and Mashura Nurilloeva, and he is recruiting postdoctoral researchers and graduate students to expand his investigations into diet-microbiota-immune interactions. The lab utilizes advanced techniques including flow cytometry, microscopy, metagenomic analyses, single-cell and spatial transcriptomics, and high-resolution mass spectrometry-based metabolomics to decode immunoregulatory functions of microbiota-derived metabolites.
