M. Ashfaqul Alam is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics at the University of Kentucky School of Medicine. His research focuses on host-microbiota interactions, examining how gut microbiota and their metabolites influence intestinal epithelial barrier function and inflammatory responses in diseases like inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer.
He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry under Dr. Michelle Dziejman and completed postdoctoral training in Professor Andrew Neish's lab at Emory University, specializing in epithelial biology and microbiome studies.
Research Highlights:
- Investigating mechanisms of microbiota-driven intestinal repair via metabolomics and metagenomics
- Elucidating roles of Akkermansia muciniphila in enterocyte proliferation and inflammation
- Developing computational and bioinformatic approaches to study gut microbiome dynamics
- Exploring microbe-neuronal interactions in gastrointestinal motility
Laboratory Focus:
- Host-microbiota crosstalk in mucosal homeostasis
- Redox signaling and reactive oxygen species in barrier function
- Application of molecular genetics and advanced bioinformatics
Hailing from the Alam Laboratory, his work bridges microbiology, immunology, and molecular genetics to address critical questions in intestinal disease pathogenesis.
