Mirko Canevaro serves as Professor of Greek History at the University of Edinburgh's School of History, Classics and Archaeology within the Department of Classics. His academic journey includes progression from Chancellor's Fellow (2013-2017) to Reader (2017-2019) before attaining his current professorship in 2019. Prior to Edinburgh, he held research positions at the British School at Athens and Universität Mannheim.
His research centers on the institutional, social, cultural and economic history of ancient Athens and Greek cities, with particular focus on citizen-centered political organization of the Greek polis. Key areas include Athenian democracy, political institutions, law, economy, and cultural history. His methodological approach combines philological analysis of primary sources with historical and political theory frameworks.
His publication trajectory reveals evolving scholarly interests from foundational work on Athenian legal documents toward broader investigations of political economy, social structures, and philosophical reflections on governance. His major works demonstrate increasing sophistication in connecting legal texts with wider societal contexts and theoretical frameworks.
