Alberto Esu is a Lecturer in Classical Greek History at the University of Manchester (since 2025). Previously, he held roles as Assistant Professor at the University of Nottingham (2022–2023), Leverhulme Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Mannheim (2019–2022), and postdoctoral researcher at the University of Zurich (2023–2024). He earned his PhD in Classics from the University of Edinburgh (2018), MA in Classics from Durham University (2014), and earlier degrees from the University of Cagliari, Italy.
His research focuses on Greek political and legal institutions during the Classical and Hellenistic periods, emphasizing New Institutionalism approaches. Key works include his monograph Divided Power in Ancient Greece (Oxford UP, 2024), which challenges traditional sovereignty models, and co-edited volumes on Athenian legal rhetoric and institutional frameworks. Current projects explore the intellectual and symbolic dimensions of Greek political offices (archai/timai).
His work intersects with UN SDG 4 (Quality Education) through scholarly contributions to classical studies pedagogy and public engagement. Awards include the Leverhulme Fellowship and UZH postdoctoral grant. Collaborations span European institutions, advancing interdisciplinary studies of ancient governance systems.
