Dr. Mirjam Plantinga is a Senior Researcher at the University of Groningen’s Faculty of Medical Sciences and the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), affiliated with the ELSI (Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications) research group. Her work focuses on responsible implementation of healthcare innovations, particularly in genetics and AI applications. She holds a PhD in Behavioral and Social Sciences from the University of Groningen.
Research interests include AI ethics in healthcare, public engagement, patient involvement in genetic screening, and the societal implications of genomic technologies. Mirjam is a visiting research fellow at Clinical Ethics and Law Southampton and leads projects on AI inclusivity and clinical genetics.
Her recent work addresses professional and public perspectives on AI in newborn screening, ethical challenges in genomic data reanalysis, and expanded carrier screening policies. She received a prestigious 2.2 million euro ELSA grant for AI ethics research and collaborates internationally on patient-centered care initiatives.
Key achievements include over 50 peer-reviewed publications, media engagements on AI in healthcare, and contributions to policy frameworks for genetic testing. She actively participates in conferences and public lectures to bridge academic research with societal needs.
