Dr. Els Maeckelberghe is an Associate Professor in Bioethics and Research Ethics, and Confidential Advisor for Scientific Integrity at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Medical Sciences. She holds dual roles at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) and Beatrix Children's Hospital. Her career spans over three decades, including roles as Assistant Professor in Ethics since 1999, Senior Lecturer in Healthcare Ethics (2012–2014), and mediator (NMI-registered, 2009–2012). She has held academic positions across theology, nursing science, and women’s studies, reflecting her interdisciplinary approach to ethics.
Her expertise includes Medical Ethics, Scientific Integrity, and ELSI (Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications) in genetics. She advises on moral deliberation at Beatrix Children’s Hospital and serves on critical committees such as the Central Committee for Animal Experimentation (Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality) and the Supervisory Board of Zorggroep Alliade. Her research focuses on complex ethical challenges in healthcare, including AI ethics, pediatric end-of-life decisions, and genomic data governance.
Maeckelberghe has contributed to policy debates on organ donation law reform, pandemic ethics, and wearable health technologies. Her recent work emphasizes inclusive healthcare practices and the ethical implications of emerging technologies. She remains an active public commentator on bioethical issues in Dutch media and academic platforms.
