Prof. Ellen Clayton is a Professor at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) and co-founder of the Center for Biomedical Ethics and Society. Her work focuses on the ethical, legal, and social implications (ELSI) of genomics and AI in healthcare. She co-leads a National Institutes of Health-funded Center of Excellence in ELSI Research on Genetic Privacy and Identity. Her research addresses challenges such as genetic privacy, data governance, and equity in AI-driven healthcare systems.
She is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and its Standing Committee on Reproductive Health, Equity, and Society. In recent presentations, Prof. Clayton emphasized the need for inclusive governance frameworks that balance individual rights and societal interests in data-driven healthcare, particularly for marginalized communities.
Her advocacy includes patient-centered approaches to data consent, critiques of regulatory gaps in AI ethics, and equitable implementation of genomic technologies. She collaborates on legal frameworks to address biases in healthcare algorithms and genomic data use.
