Professor Miriam Santer is a GP at Denmark Road Medical Centre in Bournemouth and holds the position of Professor of Primary Care Research in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Southampton. She co-leads National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) programmes focused on self-management of eczema, acne, and chronic pain. Her research interests include primary care dermatology (particularly eczema, acne, and cellulitis), mixed-methods research, and evaluating complex interventions. Santer chairs the Primary Care Research Centre and the NIHR School for Primary Care Research. She has received awards such as the Royal College of General Practitioners Research Paper of the Year (2019) and the SAPC Senior Investigator Research Prize (2024).
Her recent publications address opioid management, eczema care interventions, and the impact of social isolation on multimorbidity in older adults. She supervises PhD students and teaches modules on critical appraisal and long-term conditions. Santer leads major trials like the BEE trial (emollient efficacy for eczema) and the COAT study (cellulitis treatment optimization). Her work integrates clinical practice with research to improve patient outcomes in primary care settings.
