Dr. Miranda Kaufmann is a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, School of Advanced Study, University of London. She is also an Honorary Fellow of the University of Liverpool and a Fellow of both the Royal Historical Society and the Royal Society of Arts. From 2014 to 2022, she co-convened the 'What's Happening in Black British History?' workshop series, and served as Lead Historian for the Colonial Countryside project from 2019 to 2021.
Her research focuses on Black British History, History of Enslavement, Caribbean History, African History, Women's History, Colonial History, British Country Houses, Welsh History, and Local History. She has taken her work into schools with her Teaching Black Tudors project and created a Black Tudors course with FutureLearn.
Kaufmann's scholarly output includes her acclaimed book Black Tudors: The Untold Story (2017), which was shortlisted for both the Wolfson History Prize and the Nayef Al-Rodhan Prize. Her research articles consistently explore the presence and experiences of Black people in early modern Britain and Europe, examining topics ranging from individual biographies to broader social and legal contexts. Her forthcoming book Heiresses: Marriage, Inheritance and Caribbean Slavery (2025) investigates nine British women who inherited people and plantations in the Caribbean.

As an active public historian, Kaufmann has developed educational resources, participated in National Trust collaborations, and engaged with diverse audiences through speaking engagements and media appearances.
