Mimi Gellman is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Culture + Community at Emily Carr University of Art + Design. Her interdisciplinary practice bridges phenomenology, Indigenous knowledge systems, and contemporary art through embodied research methods like walking and mapping. Currently completing a PhD in Cultural Studies at Queen’s University on Indigenous mapping metaphysics, her work explores animacy and agency in non-human entities, rooted in her Ojibwe/Métis cosmological worldview.
Recent exhibitions include major shows in France, Germany, Tokyo, and the 2011 MoMA exhibition 'On Line'. She teaches courses such as FNDT 115 (Indigenous Presence) and GSMA 651 (Graduate Studio III - Low-Res), emphasizing decolonial pedagogies. Her research interrogates the intersections of:
- Aboriginal abstraction
- Material ecologies
- Ethical design frameworks
Though no specific grants or awards are listed, her international exhibition record reflects recognition of her innovative cross-cultural art practices. Current courses focus on indigenizing art education through embodied material engagements.
