Janice Toulouse is a sessional faculty member at Emily Carr University of Art + Design, specializing in Visual Arts. An award-winning Indigenous (Anishinabe Kwe) visual artist and educator, she has taught and exhibited internationally for over 30 years. Her work bridges traditional Anishinabek teachings with contemporary art practices, focusing on themes of Indigenous identity, leadership, and cultural continuity.
- First Indigenous graduate from Concordia University
- Advanced Graduate in Painting (1979) from Emily Carr College of Art
- MFA (1985) from Concordia University, Montreal
Her research interests include Indigenous art theory, intergenerational knowledge transmission through art, and decolonizing curatorial practices. She has curated exhibitions like Ogema: I Am Woman and participated in group shows such as Pushing Boundaries and The Lay of the Land.
Selected for the REVEAL Indigenous Art Awards (2017), she has exhibited internationally in France, Canada, and elsewhere. Her practice includes mentoring Indigenous youth through programs like Emily Carr's Teen Program, which she contributed to via workshops.
