Milo Barham is an Associate Professor and Deputy Director of the Curtin Frontier Institute for Geoscience Solutions (C-FIGS) at Curtin University's School of Earth and Planetary Sciences. He holds academic roles including course lead for the Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) and coordinator of the Earth Science Major. His research focuses on sedimentology, geochemistry, and detrital mineral provenance, with over $1.5M in industry-funded projects. Barham's work has been featured in National Geographic, New Scientist, and documentaries.
Education:
- BSc(Hons), National University of Ireland, Galway
- PhD(Galway), National University of Ireland, Galway
Research Interests: Barham investigates Earth's evolution through detrital records, including sedimentary system dynamics, basin evolution, and couplings to large-scale processes. His expertise spans clastic-carbonate sedimentology, detrital mineral provenance (e.g., zircon, rutile), and O-isotope geochemistry of biogenic apatite.
Awards & Recognition:
- 2023 Curtin Excellence & Innovation in Teaching Team Award
- 2021 Research Team of the Year (Curtin University)
- 2013 Guild Excellence in Teaching Award
- William King Medal (2011) for academic excellence
Teaching & Mentorship: Barham coordinates the 2nd-year Sedimentology and Stratigraphy unit, supervising seven completed and four current PhD students. He emphasizes active learning, blended teaching, and student support.
Labs & Networks: He contributes to the Timescales of Mineral Systems Group and sits on the Earth and Environmental Science Curriculum Advisory Committee for Western Australia. His international affiliations include the International Association of Sedimentologists and the Geological Society of Australia.
