Dr. Miles Oglethorpe serves as President of TICCIH (The International Committee for the Conservation of the Industrial Heritage) and Head of Industrial Heritage at Historic Environment Scotland, the national body responsible for Scotland's built heritage. With a PhD in Geography from the University of Glasgow, his career spans over three decades in industrial heritage conservation.
Dr. Oglethorpe's research focuses on industrial heritage with special emphasis on coal mining heritage and energy industry preservation. His work examines how industrial landscapes shape regional identities and communities, particularly through the legacy of coal mining which created strong regional industrial identities during the Industrial Revolution. He has pioneered efforts to document and preserve energy industry heritage, including the UK's offshore oil and gas sector through the 'Capturing the Energy' initiative.
His most significant publication, 'Scottish Collieries: An Inventory of the Scottish Coal Industry in the Nationalised Era' (2006), represents years of dedicated research on Scotland's coal industry. His recent work focuses on 'Explorations in the Preservation of Coal Mining Heritage Areas' and 'Re-evaluating our coal-mining legacy,' examining the social and economic changes triggered by the decline of coal mining industries.
