Mike Taber is a Professor and Associate Chair in the Education Department at Colorado College since 2019, previously serving as Associate Professor (2006–2019). He holds a Ph.D. in Water Resources - Micrometeorology from Iowa State University, an M.A.T. in Secondary Earth Science Teaching from Colorado College, and a B.A. in Geology from Colorado College. His research focuses on rural educator preparation, culturally responsive curriculum design, climate change pedagogy, and environmental science education. He leads the Colorado College Noyce Scholarship Program (CCNSP), a NSF-funded initiative supporting science teacher development ($1.19M). His work includes designing cross-cultural education materials and promoting data-driven instruction.
Notable awards include the 2012 Science SPORE Award and the 2012 Outstanding Paper Award from the Journal of Geoscience Education. He has held leadership roles such as Chair of Colorado College’s Education Department (2010–2019), President of the National Association of Geoscience Teachers (2009–2010), and advisory positions with organizations like NASA and NSF. His teaching spans courses like 'Culturally Responsive Teaching and Disciplinary Literacy Methods' and 'Global Climate Change.'
Recent research highlights include exploring empathy-based climate education and comparing teacher autonomy across rural, urban, and suburban settings. He collaborates internationally on environmental literacy projects and has secured over $2M in grants for teacher training programs.
