معرفی
Mike Brookes is a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Theatre, Film, and Television Studies at Aberystwyth University, appointed in 2007. An internationally recognized artist, director, and designer with a thirty-year career, he serves as the department's Creative Research Mentor since 2022, specializing in practice-based research support. His work spans context-specific performance, intermedial design, and public art interventions across Europe, Asia, Australasia, South America, and the USA.
Brookes' research centers on three interconnected threads: (1) Performance of place and performance as place, examining context-specific art and social space activation; (2) Location and orientation in expanded environments through multi-site/multi-scale performance; (3) Mediation and intermediality in relational environments. His practice-led approach integrates theoretical frameworks with tangible creative outputs, contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goals through cultural expression and social engagement.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals consistent focus on context-specific and intermedial performance, with increasing emphasis on pandemic-era adaptations and political interventions. His works demonstrate sophisticated integration of visual design, audience participation, and site-specific strategies across diverse global contexts.
His scientific recognition includes:
- Creative Wales Award (2007)
- Best Production (2012)
- Best Design (2010 and 2014)
As Creative Research Mentor, Brookes provides extensive guidance for undergraduate and postgraduate practice-based research, drawing directly from professional collaborations with National Theatre Wales, Untitled Projects, and Quarantine. His influential partnership with Rosa Casado produces commissioned works worldwide, while his prior twenty-year collaboration with Mike Pearson pioneered multi-site performance practices. These creative partnerships function as dynamic research laboratories exploring social space and audience-performer dynamics.
