Mikaela Jo Bachmann is a Lecturer and Director of the Art Education Undergraduate Program and Licensure at the University of North Texas (UNT), housed within the Department of Art Education in the College of Visual Arts and Design (CVAD). She also serves as the sponsor of UNT’s Art Education Preservice Student Chapter and as President of the Art in Special Education Interest Group within the National Art Education Association (NAEA). Her work critically examines ableist practices in public education and advocates for art education as a tool to reimagine disability and disability futures.
She holds a Ph.D. (2024) in Art Education from UNT, an M.A. (2015) in Art Education (specializing in special populations) from Moore College of Art and Design, and a B.F.A. (2013) with K-12 Art Teacher Certification from West Virginia University.
Bachmann has taught art and art history in K-12 schools in Western Pennsylvania and North Texas, and previously served as regional director of Texas’s Visual Art Scholastic Event (state secondary art competition). Her research and advocacy focus on inclusive pedagogy, disability justice in education, and equitable art curriculum design.
