Mikael Ryden is a Professor and Senior Physician at Karolinska Institutet, leading the Mikael Rydén & Niklas Mejhert lab within the Department of Medicine, Huddinge. He holds the title of Professor of Clinical and Experimental Fat Tissue Research and heads the Endocrinology Unit with a Lipid Laboratory, now part of the Center for Reproduction, Metabolism, and Molecular Medicine (CeRM). His research focuses on adipose tissue biology, lipid metabolism, and their roles in metabolic disorders such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and atherosclerosis.
Educated at Karolinska Institutet, Ryden earned his Medical Degree in 1996 and became a Docent in 2002. His work bridges clinical and experimental studies, investigating adipocyte function, immunometabolism, and epigenetic influences on metabolic health. Key achievements include uncovering adipose tissue's epigenetic memory post-weight loss and identifying molecular pathways linking obesity to inflammation and insulin resistance.
Ryden has received prestigious awards, including the Camillo Golgi Prize, and leads grants like the Swedish Research Council-funded study on adipocyte lipid turnover. His lab collaborates internationally, with members specializing in molecular biology, clinical studies, and advanced proteomics. Current projects explore adipocyte heterogeneity, mitochondrial dysfunction in obesity, and therapeutic targets for metabolic diseases.
Notable collaborations include work with Harvard University and Helmholtz Munich, contributing to platforms like the adiposetissue.org knowledge portal. Ryden supervises PhD students and mentors a team including research nurses, coordinators, and specialists in lab management and clinical trials.
