Professor Mikael Ryden is a Professor of Clinical and Experimental Fat Tissue Research at Karolinska Institutet since 2013, serving as Head of the Endocrinology Unit and co-leader of the Mikael Rydén & Niklas Mejhert lab within the Department of Medicine, Huddinge. His research focuses on adipose tissue biology, lipid metabolism, and metabolic disorders, with a focus on insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and obesity-related diseases. He holds a medical degree from Karolinska Institutet (1996) and became a Docent (2002).
His lab investigates white adipocyte function, including lipid/carbohydrate metabolism, energy storage, and immunometabolic interactions. Recent grants include a Wallenberg Clinical Scholar Extension (2025) and a Swedish Research Council grant (2023–2027). Notable awards include the Camillo Golgi Prize (2025), recognizing his contributions to metabolic research.
Advising involves mentoring PhD students such as Merve Elmastas and Gianluca Renzi. The lab’s infrastructure includes expertise in clinical methodologies (e.g., metabolic clamps) and molecular techniques. The group is part of the Center for Reproduction, Metabolism, and Molecular Medicine (CeRM), reflecting interdisciplinary collaborations.
