Miika Tervonen serves as a University Researcher and Team Leader at the EuroStorie Centre of Excellence within the University of Helsinki's Faculty of Arts, Department of Cultures. He holds the title of Docent in Nordic Studies and supervises doctoral candidates in the Social Sciences Doctoral Programme.
His educational background includes a PhD from the European University Institute (2010), with visiting scholar appointments at Columbia University, London School of Economics, and City University of New York.
Tervonen's research critically examines migration, minorities, nationalism, and coloniality within Nordic welfare states, with particular focus on deportation practices and racial narratives in Finnish historiography. His work bridges historical analysis with contemporary border politics, revealing systemic silences in national identity construction.
Analysis of his recent publications demonstrates a cohesive trajectory exploring Nordic deportation histories, Roma minority recognition, and urban displacement – consistently interrogating power structures in state narratives about migration and belonging.
His scientific recognition includes:
- Vuoden tiedekynä academic writing award (2017)
- Finnish State Award for Public Information (2013)
Tervonen directs the Academy of Finland-funded Gatekeeping the Nation project (2022-2026) analyzing Finnish deportation policy since the Cold War, while simultaneously developing a Kone Foundation-supported monograph on race in Finnish national histories. He actively supervises MA/PhD candidates and previously chaired the Nordic Migration Research network (2021-2022).
As Team Leader for the EuroStorie Centre of Excellence, he coordinates interdisciplinary research on European identity narratives while engaging public audiences through the Päivystävät dosentit science podcast and museum collaborations.
