Anna-Liisa Heusala serves as a University Lecturer in Russian and Eurasian Studies at the University of Helsinki's Faculty of Arts, specifically within the Aleksanteri Institute - Finnish Centre for Russian and East European Studies. She also holds the prestigious title of Docent in Political Science at the University of Helsinki and in Comprehensive Security at the Finnish National Defense University, demonstrating her expertise across multiple academic domains.
Her research interests focus on public administration, migration, comprehensive security, and the political dynamics of Russia and Central Asia. Heusala's scholarly work examines the intersection of migration policy and security frameworks within Eurasian contexts, with particular attention to how authoritarian governance structures interact with transnational migration flows. Her research methodology combines legal analysis with political science frameworks to understand the complex administrative challenges in post-Soviet states.
Analysis of Heusala's recent publications reveals a strong thematic focus on the relationship between migration patterns and political systems in Eurasia, particularly examining how illiberal regimes manage migration flows and how migration serves as both a challenge and tool for state power. Her work increasingly addresses the geopolitical implications of Russia's war in Ukraine on migration patterns across Central Asia and Eastern Europe.

Her work demonstrates strong international collaboration, particularly with institutions in Central Asia.
