Miguel Zenón serves as Associate Professor in the Music Department within MIT's School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, while maintaining an active international career as a Grammy Award-winning saxophonist and composer. His unique position bridges academic scholarship with professional artistry, regularly engaging students through lectures and master classes worldwide while simultaneously pushing creative boundaries through commissioned works and recordings.
Zenón's research interests focus on the intersection of jazz with Puerto Rican musical traditions, cultural identity, and historical narratives. His work examines how musical forms like plena and bolero can be adapted into contemporary jazz frameworks while preserving cultural authenticity. He explores themes of migration, social justice, and urban development through ambitious conceptual projects that blend scholarly research with artistic expression, creating what The New York Times has described as "a fine mix between jazz and his many musical influences."
His recent publications reveal a consistent pattern of using music as a vehicle for cultural investigation, with albums like Golden City examining San Francisco's demographic history and Música De Las Américas exploring continental musical connections. These works demonstrate his signature approach of conducting intensive historical research before transforming findings into sophisticated musical compositions that address both broad cultural themes and specific historical moments.
