Chad McCullough serves as Adjunct Lecturer in Jazz Studies at DePaul University's School of Music, specializing in Jazz Trumpet and Jazz Combos instruction. A Chicago-based trumpeter/composer hailed by the Chicago Tribune for "solos of mercurial poetry and high craft," he maintains an active international performance career.
His educational background includes:
- BM from University of Idaho (Lionel Hampton Scholar, first jazz-emphasis graduate)
- MM from University of Washington
McCullough's artistic research focuses on introspective jazz trumpet performance and contemporary composition, characterized by "measured and deliberate" approaches that create "continuity of mood and atmosphere." His work bridges acoustic tradition with modern production techniques, as evidenced by orchestral post-production in recent albums.
With 15 albums as leader/co-leader, his creative output demonstrates consistent exploration of jazz trio dynamics and expanded sonic textures. The 2020 album Forward exemplifies this trajectory through its integration of live trio performance (Matt Ulery, Rob Clearfield, Jon Deitemyer) with Ryan Cohan's orchestral programming.
His artistic recognition includes:
- Lionel Hampton Scholar designation
- DCASE grant for Tim Hagans mentorship
- DCASE grant for Forward album production
McCullough has secured significant grant support from Chicago's Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE), participated in Banff Centre's jazz workshop (2009), and hosted the 2019 Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Competition. His performance history includes collaborations with Maria Schneider, Miguel Zenon, and Dave Douglas across major festivals worldwide.
As a performing artist, he leads ensembles featured at New York's Festival of New Trumpet Music, Chicago Jazz Festival, and Earshot Jazz Festival (Seattle), utilizing custom AR Resonance mouthpieces/trumpets and Hub Van Laar flugelhorn to achieve his distinctive "gorgeously melancholic" sound.
