Dr. Michelle Porter is a Professor in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management at the University of Manitoba, where she has served as Director of the Centre on Aging since 2015. Her research focuses on physical activity and aging, older driver safety through the Candrive project, and advancing age-friendly university initiatives. She holds a PhD in Kinesiology from Western University and completed postdoctoral research in Scandinavia and Boston. A fellow of the Gerontological Society of America, she also leads national and international efforts in age-friendly policies, including Manitoba's Transportation Options Network for Seniors (TONS) and Active Aging Canada.
Her research interests span gerontology, driver safety for older adults, and combating ageism through interventions like Reimagine Aging. Key projects include the Candrive longitudinal study analyzing older driver behavior and the development of age-friendly university frameworks. She has contributed to global initiatives such as the Our Voice citizen science model to improve community environments.
Recent work highlights include studies on vaccination directives for older adults, the impact of pandemic messaging on autonomy, and long-term care facility redesigns for dementia patients. Dr. Porter's publications reflect her commitment to interdisciplinary research addressing aging-related challenges in health, mobility, and societal inclusion.
