Michele Duncan is a Lecturer at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), affiliated with the Faculty of Theory and History of Art and Design. She holds a BA (with honors) in German Literature from Mills College, and an MA and PhD in German Intellectual History from Cornell University. Her research focuses on the intersections of art, music, and society in 20th-century Germany and Austria, particularly Viennese Modernism. She has held visiting roles, including the Fulbright Freud Visiting Scholar at the Freud Museum, Vienna, and Visiting Professor at the University of Vienna (2014).
Her scholarly work includes a manuscript exploring music’s role in Viennese Modernism and contributions to Cambridge Opera Journal as guest editor. She has received grants from institutions like the NEH and DAAD. Beyond RISD, she has taught German Studies, Gender Studies, and Media Studies at Brandeis, Brown, MIT, and others. She also mentors first-generation college students through Upward Bound at Rhode Island College.
Key interests span aesthetics, philosophy, and interdisciplinary studies of music and psychoanalysis. Her awards reflect recognition in cultural and intellectual history.
