Professor Michelle Dickson is an Aboriginal Australian academic at the University of Sydney, holding roles as Director of the Poche Centre for Indigenous Health and Deputy Head of School (Public Health) in the Sydney School of Public Health. Her academic career spans over a decade, with previous roles including Program Director for Indigenous Health Promotion (2013–2021) and Director of Teaching and Learning in Public Health (2016–2019). She is affiliated with multiple university research centers: Sydney Environment Institute, Sydney Southeast Asia Centre, and the Charles Perkins Centre.
Her education includes a BA (Hons), PGDip Ed (Adult), PGCert Dev, MEd, and PhD in Medicine. Research interests focus on Indigenous health equity, including chronic disease prevention, wellbeing frameworks, cultural safety in healthcare, and maternal-child health. She leads initiatives like the 'What Matters 2 Adults' wellbeing measure development and collaborates with international institutions such as the University of Toronto (Canada), Rajarata University (Sri Lanka), and the University of the Philippines Manila.
Prof Dickson has secured significant grants, including an Australian Research Council project on disability workforce recruitment and National Health and Medical Research Council funding for wellbeing measurement tools. Her work emphasizes Indigenous-led research, addressing systemic inequities in healthcare access and outcomes. Notable contributions include studies on food insecurity, renal disease in Indigenous children, and the impact of prenatal substance exposure on long-term health.
