Michele Outland is an Adjunct Professor in the field of Photography and Imaging. She brings over 25 years of professional experience as a creative director in food media and publishing, with a focus on visual storytelling and editorial design.
Her educational background includes a BFA in Graphic Design from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MA in Communication Design from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London.
Her research and professional interests center around food visual culture, publication design, and brand development in digital and print media. She has made significant contributions to the visual identity of major culinary brands and magazines, emphasizing aesthetic innovation and narrative depth in food-related content.
Throughout her career, she has been recognized with numerous design accolades, including a James Beard Award and multiple Society of Publication Designers honors.

She is the co-founder and creative director of Gather Journal, a recipe-based food magazine launched in 2012. Her past roles include Creative Director at Bon Appétit, where she oversaw the visual strategy for Bon Appétit, Healthyish, Basically, and Epicurious, leading the brand to an ASME for Design and nine SPD awards. She also contributed to the launch of Everyday Food and Domino Magazine, and has worked with clients such as Martha Stewart Living, The New York Times Magazine, NYLON, and New York.
Her work bridges academic design principles with industry innovation, particularly in the evolving landscape of food media and digital publishing.
