Michele Gilman serves as Venable Professor of Law at the University of Baltimore School of Law, directing the Saul Ewing Civil Advocacy Clinic and co-directing the Center on Applied Feminism. Her teaching portfolio includes Evidence, Administrative Law, and Poverty Law.
She holds a J.D. from the University of Michigan and a B.A. from Duke University, with prior professional experience as a DOJ Civil Rights Division trial attorney, Arnold & Porter associate, and law clerk for Judge Frank A. Kaufman. Her research critically examines technology's impact on marginalized communities through privacy law, poverty law, and feminist legal theory frameworks.
Professor Gilman's scholarly work has been published in premier journals including California Law Review and Vanderbilt Law Review, with media commentary focusing on data privacy disparities affecting low-income populations. Her 2019-2020 Data & Society fellowship specifically addressed privacy law intersections with poverty.
Notable honors include the 2009 Outstanding Teaching Award, 2010 USM Board of Regents' Public Service Award, and her 2023-2024 Georgetown Law appointment as Visiting Professor and Acting Director of the Communications and Technology Law Clinic.
She maintains active public service through past presidency of the Public Justice Center (2004-2014), Maryland Bar committee memberships, and advocacy for low-income Marylanders via ACLU and Women's Law Center initiatives.
