Dr. Michele Fugiel Gartner is a Lecturer at Mount Royal University (Calgary, Alberta) where she teaches nonprofit management and social innovation in the School of Public Policy and Administration. She concurrently serves as Lead Researcher with Philanthropic Foundations Canada and advises organizations globally through her affiliation with the Society of Estate and Trust Practitioners' Global Philanthropy Advisory Group. Her academic credentials include a PhD from the University of St Andrews (School of Management), MA in international studies from SOAS (University of London), and BA in communication from Arizona State University.
Her research focuses on philanthropy's operational realities, foundation professionalism, and the intersection of academia and practice ('pracademia'). Key themes include CEO experiences in family foundations, evolving roles of foundation staff, and systemic challenges in the nonprofit sector. She advocates for deeper explorations into microfoundations of philanthropic practices and has pioneered conceptual frameworks for understanding foundation professionalization.
Her work bridges theory and practice through publications in journals like Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly and Journal of Philanthropy and Marketing. Her 2024 Philanthropic Foundations of Canada report provides critical insights into Canadian philanthropy's institutional landscape. She holds the Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy® designation (2016) and maintains advisory roles with major foundations including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Trico Charitable Foundation.
