Michał Matlak serves as Assistant Professor at the Department of Political and Legal Doctrines, Faculty of Law and Administration, University of Lodz. He co-founded the European Centre for Political Studies at the university and maintains a senior fellowship at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies, European University Institute in Florence.
His academic journey includes doctoral studies at the European University Institute in Florence, complemented by research fellowships at Princeton University, University of Montreal, Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna, and Hertie School in Berlin. He has participated in ERC and Horizon Programme research projects.
Dr. Matlak's research examines strategic autonomy, sovereignty frameworks within European integration, EU foreign and defense policy mechanisms, enlargement processes, and science policy structures. His methodology bridges academic theory with practical policy implementation through publications in major international outlets.
He previously directed the Review of Democracy journal (CEU Democracy Institute) and managed the Enlargement Hub consortium connecting European research institutions with EU expansion initiatives.

As founder of the European Union Security Initiative, he facilitates dialogue between EU governments, the European Commission, and academia on security matters. His publications span Le Monde, The New York Review of Books, Esprit, Rzeczpospolita, and Gazeta Wyborcza.
